What is essential hardware for my door?

There are lots of different types of door furniture listed on our website and this can feel overwhelming however, we are always on hand to let you know what you need whether that is in our show room or over phone/email. There are some staple pieces that every door needs:

A handle – Either a door lever or a door knob. In modern houses, levers are usually more popular as they are more accessible to everyone. However, door knobs make it harder for young children and pets to enter the room, adding an extra level of security.

Hinges – These are usually sold in pairs however, three may be used if a door is particularly heavy or for aesthetic preferences. We normally recommend matching these with the handle.

Latches – We sell a range of sizes to fit any door dimension, just ask one of our door experts for your specific needs.

Extras  – As well as the essentials, there are also lock sets available to purchase in a range of different styles and functions. Escutcheons work to hide a keyhole in an internal door, ensuring high quality design. Turn and Release door locks allow for easy privacy for a bathroom or shower room; a simple mechanism with emergency release buttons. For a different room such as an office, we stock Privacy Door Handles which have a simple lock button mechanism that is so discreet, they appear just like our normal lever handles.

Choosing the right hardware for my door:

The list of hardware you might need all depends on the functionality of the room and who will be using it:

Location  –  Which room is it for? A bathroom or office may need a privacy hardware pack such as this one.

Users –  Who is going to enter this room? Is it accessible to elderly people and young children? A lever handle is considered easier to operate than a door knob, therefore if accessibility is a concern, then something like the Flex Lever Chrome would be our recommended choice.

Style –  Although functionality would be the main concern when choosing hardware, complementing with the décor of the room is also important. This doesn’t necessarily mean matching, however looking at what hardware correlates nicely with your room is a must, whether that is a stand-out contrasting look, or matching styles throughout. You may want to look at handles on wardrobes, cupboard spaces and drawers in order to keep an overall aesthetic theme within a room or a home.

Whatever you choose to do with your door, hardware is important both functionally and aesthetically. We hope that this post can give you some guidance when purchasing your new door furniture, however if you have any other enquiries please contact one of our helpful experts on  0191 414 1300  or pop into our Blaydon showroom.
