5 signs you need new internal doors

For most of us, our interior doors see a lot of traffic. With constant opening and closing, it’s normal for doors to become tired and not fit for purpose. If you’ve noticed any of the following signs, it could be time to invest in replacement internal doors.

Plus, a new door can be an opportunity to change up your home’s aesthetic and give your home a new lease of life!

Do I need new interior doors?

Some issues that arise with internal doors are easy to fix. Perhaps you’ve got a loose door handle, for instance, or would like to get a new panel of glass. You might be able to freshen it up with a lick of paint or keep it shiny with a coat of varnish.

Often, you can replace elements without needing to buy a brand new door and frame. Other issues, however, can suggest that a new interior door is your best course of action.

1. Draughts coming in from around the doorframe

Have you noticed a cold breeze sneaking in around the doorframe? A draught could indicate cracks or warping and suggests your home isn’t being properly insulated. You may also notice your energy bills going up if you don’t block the gaps.

You could try putting draught excluders in place if cold air is coming through at the bottom but this is not a permanent solution and won’t help if the gaps are higher up around the frame. To ensure you feel warm and comfortable without turning the heating on full blast, you might like to fit a new internal door to properly draught-proof your home. Plus, addressing your insulation this way can help you save on those heating costs.

2. Light shining through the cracks around the door

Similarly, in warmer weather, you might not notice a cold draught but may find light shining in around your door. Again, this may suggest that your doors don’t properly fit in their frames and may not be insulating your home effectively. It’s best to get a new door before it creates problems when the temperature drops.

3. Your doors are difficult to open or close

Another tell-tale sign you may need new interior doors is if they become tough to open or close. Sometimes, this can happen if the door wasn’t fitted properly in the first place. However, the most common cause is general wear and tear – as well as changes in temperature. Depending on how the door has moved or expanded, it may drag across the floor and create scratch marks.

If you find you need to exert force to open or shut a door, or it doesn’t fit flush against the frame, a new door is a good idea. And if you’re planning to install the new door yourself, our guide on how to measure for a new door will help you make sure you get the perfect fit.

4. You can see noticeable damage

It’s not unusual for doors to become scratched, chipped or cracked with frequent use. It’s worth keeping an eye on small areas of damage as they can worsen over time. What may start out as a minor crack may spread and create insulation issues. It’s a good idea to check hinges, handles, and other elements of door furniture regularly, too.

5. You can hear sounds from other rooms

Over time, the acoustic insulation of your doors can diminish. If you’re suddenly hearing the TV from your housemate’s room or the clanking from the kitchen as your partner cooks, you may want to look into replacing your interior doors. Chances are, you’ll be able to enjoy the peace and quiet you fondly remember!
